CCNA Renewal: How to Recertify Before Your CCNA Expires
Every Cisco certification carries an expiry date, and CCNA renewal is the process of resetting that clock before it runs out. The rules changed in Cisco's 2020 programme overhaul and now apply uniformly across every level, so the path that renews a CCNA is structurally the same one that renews a CCIE — only the numbers move.
The short answer
A CCNA is valid for three years. You renew it by re-passing the CCNA 200-301 exam, by passing any higher-level Cisco exam, or by earning 30 Continuing Education credits before the expiry date. There is no grace period — the certification becomes inactive the day it expires.
How long a CCNA actually lasts
A CCNA is active for three years from the date you pass, not from the date you enrolled or received the certificate. That date is visible in your Cisco certification record and on your digital badge.
When it lapses, nothing is retroactive. The badge flips to expired, you can no longer claim active CCNA status on a CV or a tender document, and the Continuing Education route closes — because those credits must be banked before expiry, not after.
Cisco does not operate a grace period. A certification becomes inactive on its expiry date, and all 30 Continuing Education credits must be earned before that date — the CE route cannot be used retroactively.
The three CCNA renewal paths compared
| Path | What it requires | Best suited to | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-pass the same exam | Pass CCNA 200-301 again | Engineers who want to stay at Associate level | Any time before expiry |
| Pass a higher exam | Any Professional-level exam, e.g. CCNP ENCOR 350-401 | Anyone whose role is growing — renews CCNA and adds CCNP | Any time before expiry |
| Continuing Education | 30 CE credits from Cisco-approved activity | Working engineers who cannot schedule an exam | All 30 credits before expiry |
Renewing by moving up a level
The most common route among working engineers is not repeating CCNA at all. Because passing a higher-level exam recertifies everything beneath it, a single CCNP pass renews the CCNA for another three years and adds a Professional-level certification in the same sitting.
- Check your exact expiry date in your Cisco certification record.
- Choose the concentration that matches your work — CCNP Enterprise is the usual choice for routing and switching roles.
- Book the exam with enough margin that a retake still lands before expiry.
- Confirm the renewal has posted to your certification record afterwards.
Renewing with Continuing Education credits
Continuing Education suits engineers who cannot commit to an exam date. Credits come from Cisco-approved activity — training courses, authoring, and instructor work among them — and each credit stays valid for three years from the day the activity was completed.
The practical constraint is timing rather than difficulty: the full 30 credits must be recorded before expiry, and approval is not instant. Starting in the final month is the most common way this route fails.
What to do if your CCNA has already expired
An expired CCNA is not permanent damage. The knowledge does not disappear, and Cisco does not penalise a lapse — you simply return to the same three options, minus Continuing Education. In practice that means sitting an exam: either CCNA 200-301 again, or a higher-level exam that supersedes it.
If several years have passed, treat it as a re-study rather than a formality. The 200-301 blueprint now carries automation, security fundamentals and wireless content that older CCNA tracks did not.
Frequently asked questions
Does CCNA expire?
Yes. Every Cisco CCNA is active for three years from the date you pass. On the expiry date the certification becomes inactive automatically, and your digital badge shows as expired.
Is there a grace period after my CCNA expires?
No. Cisco does not offer a grace period or extensions. The certification becomes inactive on the expiry date itself, which is why the Continuing Education route must be completed before that date.
How many Continuing Education credits do I need to renew CCNA?
Thirty CE credits renew an Associate-level certification such as CCNA. Professional level (CCNP) requires 80 credits and Expert level (CCIE) requires 120. Credits stay valid for three years from completion.
Does passing CCNP renew my CCNA?
Yes. Passing any higher-level exam recertifies everything below it, so a CCNP pass renews your CCNA for a further three years. This is why many engineers treat renewal as a reason to move up rather than repeat.
Planning your CCNA renewal
Treat the expiry date as a planning input, not a deadline to react to. Engineers who diarise it twelve months ahead almost always renew by moving up to CCNP; those who discover it with a month left usually end up re-sitting the exam they already passed. CCNA renewal is rarely difficult — it is simply unforgiving of late starts.
