Certification Roadmap

The Cisco Certification Roadmap: From Beginner to Expert

The Cisco certification path runs through three levels: CCNA (Associate) → CCNP (Professional) → CCIE (Expert), built on a foundation of networking fundamentals. Cisco CyberOps is a separate security branch for SOC and blue-team roles. Below is the full path as a visual roadmap, with realistic timelines, fees and how to choose your track.

The roadmap

Stage 0 · Start

Networking Fundamentals

no exam · self-paced

How networks actually move data: IP addressing, subnetting, the OSI model, cabling and the CLI. You can pick this up alongside CCNA — it is the ground everything else stands on.

Stage 1 · Associate

CCNA 200-301

2-3 months · Rs 21,000

The foundation certification and the one employers ask for first. Routing, switching, IP services, security fundamentals, wireless and automation basics — one exam. This is where a networking career begins.

Branches from CCNA · Security

Cisco CyberOps Associate 200-201

~2 months · call for fee

The security track. Trains SOC analysts to monitor, detect and respond to threats. Not a step on the CCNA-CCNP-CCIE ladder — a parallel path for blue-team and Security Operations Center roles, and much easier with CCNA behind you.

Stage 2 · Professional

CCNP Enterprise

3-4 months · Rs 50,000

The professional level: a core exam (ENCOR 350-401) plus one concentration such as ENARSI. Deeper enterprise routing, switching, design, troubleshooting and automation — the cert that moves you from junior to senior network roles.

Stage 3 · Expert

CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure

6+ months · Rs 80,000

The summit: a qualifying written exam and a demanding 8-hour hands-on lab. Expert-level design, deployment and operation of complex networks — one of the most respected credentials in the industry.

Fees shown are Attila Technologies course fees (Ahmedabad); Cisco's exam fees are paid separately to the testing vendor. Prerequisites reflect real-world practice — Cisco has relaxed several formal ones, but the knowledge is still assumed.

How long does the whole path take?

End to end, CCNA to CCIE is realistically 12-24 months of steady study — and most people gain job experience between levels, which makes each step easier than the last.

Which track should you choose?

The enterprise track (CCNA → CCNP → CCIE) is the classic networking path: design, build and run the networks that businesses depend on. It has the largest job market and feeds naturally into cloud and automation careers later.

The security branch (CyberOps) suits you if defending networks appeals more than building them — monitoring, threat detection and incident response in a Security Operations Center. Deciding between them? Read CCNA vs CyberOps, and for the wider career picture see the career hub.

You are not locked in. Many engineers start on the enterprise track, earn CCNA, then branch into security — the networking foundation makes either direction easier.

Key takeaways

  • The Cisco ladder is CCNA → CCNP → CCIE, from associate to expert.
  • CCNA is where everyone starts — it is the foundation and the cert employers ask for first.
  • CyberOps is a security branch, not a rung on the ladder; CCNA makes it much easier.
  • Full path CCNA to CCIE is realistically 12-24 months with study and job experience combined.
  • Cisco exam fees are separate from and additional to any training fees.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I start with Cisco certification?

Start with the fundamentals, then CCNA (exam 200-301). CCNA has no formal prerequisites and is the foundation the whole Cisco path is built on — you do not need a degree or prior experience, just networking basics you can learn as you go.

Do I need CCNA before CCNP?

Cisco removed the formal prerequisite, so technically you can attempt CCNP without CCNA. In practice CCNP assumes solid CCNA-level knowledge of routing and switching, so almost everyone does CCNA first — skipping it usually means learning the basics the hard way.

How long does the full CCNA to CCIE path take?

Roughly 12-24 months of steady study depending on pace and whether you work alongside: about 2-3 months for CCNA, 3-4 for CCNP, and 6+ months to prepare for the CCIE lab. Most people also gain job experience between levels, which makes the higher certs far easier.

Where does CyberOps fit in the roadmap?

Cisco CyberOps Associate (200-201) is a security branch rather than a step on the CCNA-CCNP-CCIE ladder. It suits students heading for Security Operations Center (SOC) and blue-team roles. Networking knowledge from CCNA makes CyberOps much easier, so many students do CCNA first, then branch into CyberOps.

How much does the whole Cisco path cost?

At Attila Technologies the course fees are CCNA Rs 21,000, CCNP Rs 50,000 and CCIE Rs 80,000 (CyberOps: call for the current fee). Cisco's exam fees are paid separately to the testing vendor and are additional to training. See the course-fees page for current figures and instalment options.
