Networking Interview Questions for Freshers
Fresh out of college and interviewing for your first networking role? These are the fundamentals every entry-level interview covers, explained simply. Nail these and you're ahead of most freshers. Then practise on our free CCNA test.
How to prepare
Fresher interviews test clear fundamentals and enthusiasm, not deep expertise. Know the OSI layers, the difference between IP and MAC addresses, TCP vs UDP, and basic subnetting — and don't be afraid to reason aloud. Interviewers hire attitude and fundamentals at this level. Consider a certification like CCNA to stand out.
Frequently asked questions
What are the layers of the OSI model?
Seven: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application (mnemonic: All People Seem To Need Data Processing).
What is the difference between an IP address and a MAC address?
An IP address is a logical Layer 3 address used for routing between networks; a MAC address is a fixed Layer 2 hardware address used for delivery within a network.
What is the difference between TCP and UDP?
TCP is reliable and connection-oriented (acknowledgments, ordering); UDP is fast and connectionless — used for streaming, voice and DNS.
What is a subnet mask?
It defines which portion of an IP address is the network and which is the host — e.g. 255.255.255.0 (/24) means the first three octets are the network.
What is the difference between a switch and a router?
A switch forwards frames within a network by MAC address (Layer 2); a router forwards packets between networks by IP address (Layer 3).
What is DNS?
The Domain Name System — it translates human-readable names like google.com into IP addresses computers use to connect.
What is DHCP?
A protocol that automatically assigns IP addresses and network settings to devices, using the DORA process (Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledge).
What is a default gateway?
The router address a device uses to send traffic to other networks — its exit point from the local subnet.
