How to Download & Install Packet Tracer
Cisco Packet Tracer is free, but it comes only from Cisco: you create a free Cisco NetAcad (SkillsForAll) account, download the installer for your OS, and log in with that account on first launch. Ten minutes, fully legal, no cracked copies needed.
Step 1 — get the free Cisco account
Go to Cisco's skillsforall.com (Cisco Networking Academy) and self-enrol in the free Getting Started with Packet Tracer course. That enrolment is what entitles you to the download and the login the app requires. Avoid third-party download sites — old, tampered installers are a real risk.
Step 2 — download and install
- Windows: download the 64-bit .exe → run → Next through the installer.
- macOS: download the .dmg (Apple Silicon and Intel builds exist) → drag to Applications.
- Linux: download the .deb (Ubuntu/Debian) →
sudo apt install ./Packet_Tracer*.deb.
Step 3 — first launch
Open Packet Tracer and sign in with your NetAcad/SkillsForAll account (choose the matching login type). You can use guest mode, but it limits saves — the free account removes that. Then drag a router and a PC onto the canvas, cable them, and you are labbing.
Common install problems, fixed
- "Login failed" — you must enrol in a NetAcad/SkillsForAll course first; a bare Cisco account isn't entitled.
- Blank white window (Windows) — update graphics drivers or disable GPU acceleration in PT settings.
- Linux missing libraries — install with
apt(not dpkg alone) so dependencies resolve. - Old .pkt files won't open — files from newer PT versions don't open in older ones; always run the current release.

Yes — Cisco ships Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Ubuntu/Debian Linux builds of the current releases.
Is Packet Tracer enough for CCNA?
Yes for the exam's simulation needs — it covers the full CCNA syllabus. Pair it with real-hardware practice for job readiness.
