How to Build a Home Lab for CCNA Practice
You can practise CCNA without spending much. The three main options are Cisco Packet Tracer (free, ideal for CCNA), EVE-NG or Cisco CML (emulation for realism), and real Cisco hardware (best feel, higher cost). For most CCNA students, Packet Tracer plus some real-gear time is perfect.
Option 1: Cisco Packet Tracer (free)
Cisco's free network simulator is the best starting point for CCNA. It supports VLANs, routing, ACLs, DHCP, NAT and more, and runs on a modest laptop. Perfect for building and breaking topologies safely.
Option 2: EVE-NG / Cisco CML (emulation)
For more realism, EVE-NG or Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) run actual network operating systems. They need more RAM/CPU and are especially valuable as you move toward CCNP and CCIE.
Option 3: Real Cisco hardware
Used routers and switches give the most authentic experience — real cables, console access and command behaviour. A small lab of a couple of routers and switches is enough to cover CCNA.
Cost comparison
| Option | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Packet Tracer | Free | CCNA fundamentals |
| EVE-NG / CML | Low-Medium | Realism, CCNP prep |
| Real hardware | Medium | Authentic hands-on |
A simple starter topology
Two switches connected by a trunk, two VLANs, a router for inter-VLAN routing, and a couple of PCs. This single topology lets you practise VLANs, trunking, routing and ACLs — see our VLAN & trunking guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is Packet Tracer enough for CCNA?
For most CCNA topics, yes. Packet Tracer covers routing, switching, VLANs, ACLs and more, and is free from Cisco.
What is the difference between Packet Tracer and EVE-NG?
Packet Tracer is a simulator (simplified, free); EVE-NG and CML emulate real Cisco IOS for higher realism, useful for CCNP/CCIE.
Do I need real Cisco hardware for CCNA?
Not strictly, but hands-on time with real routers and switches builds confidence — which is why we train on real lab devices at Attila Technologies.
